than 14,000 islands, Lake of the Woods is
the ultimate big water fishing destination.
It o;ers world-class walleye, sauger,
muskellunge, smallmouth bass and lake
sturgeon fishing. Charter boats are readily
available. Lake of the Woods is a winter
walleye angler’s paradise, too, as ice covers
the lake roughly six months of the year.

Covering 67,000 acres, “Big Winnie”
is the state’s fourth-largest lake.
Surrounded by the Chippewa National
Forest, nearly all of the lake’s 140
miles of shoreline are undeveloped.
Big Winnie is the perfect getaway for
a family fishing vacation. The lake is
primarily known for its walleye and
keeper-sized perch, though northern
pike and other species are also present.

Upper Red Lake
Located partially within the Red Lake
Indian Reservation, Upper Red Lake
covers 120,000 acres, and public fishing
is available on 48,000 of them. In recent
years, Red Lake has provided some of
the ho;est walleye fishing in the state.
It’s also a go-to destination for northern
pike 40 inches or larger. Crappies are
the lake’s bonus fish, with fair numbers
in the 8- to 12-inch range.

Nestled against the city of Bemidji,
this 6,420-acre lake consistently
produces good walleye fishing. It is
a trophy muskellunge lake, too, with
fish more than 50 inches long caught
annually. Perch and northern pike are
also good bets.

In addition, many communities in
northwest Minnesota host fishing
tournaments and fish-related events.
Perhaps the most notable is the
annual Eelpout Festival in Walker, held
each February on Leech Lake. This
celebration of an unusual bo;om-dwelling fish draws some 10,000 people
to the ice, primarily those who enjoy a
good mid-winter party.
